Mike, the preamble does a decent job of explaining things.

They're measuring your thinking on econ issues, and your thinking on social issues, and then plotting them on an axis.

So, left on social issues is stuff like freedom of choice, equal rights, etc.

And the definition of left that they use for econ issues involves stuff like how much the government should be involved in your life.
