Forum posts for PS2 vs. XBOX

I've got some advice...
Posted by phduffy on Nov 25, 2003
If you put either of those on your wishlist, expect to be disapointed this year at Christmas.

PS2
Posted by Nerhael on Nov 25, 2003
I'd say the PS2 hands down. Pretty much all the good games that come out come out for it. And most of the misc games come out on all 3 platforms anywho.

Yes, the ps2 is the less pretty of the two, but I would expect that to be a minimal difference and that for the most part, you won't really notice it.

I think the PS2 has a far better controller, though I will say that sony has to get their fucking act together and start designing their system with four controller ports.

Xbox requires you to buy a $30-50 remote to be able to use their dvd capability, (BULLSHIT).

The Xbox is really just a god damned computer with the occaisional exclusive game rights. It's a crock of shit far as I'm concerned. I will state that I am biased towards MS, but think that's more of an afterthought in all honesty.

HEYOOOOOO!

COMEDY ENSUES!

As for your question.....it depends on what you like to play,. I myself hate the xbox, but I like fighting games like tekken and rpg's like Final Fantasy, two categories that the xbox sucks crap at. But Halo and a bunch of other games are apparently amazing. This might alll be irrelevant as most of the major games are being released on both platforms anyway. Most people sa y the xbox has better graphics and is the stronger machine.....you've played both, which are you leaning towards?

x box
Posted by Polfuss on Nov 25, 2003
with the x box though you can get the mod chip and upgrade your hard drive and then you can rent games and download them to the hard drive for future fun. I actualy like the xbox controler at least the kind i got

Why you would buy an Xbox
Posted by phduffy on Nov 25, 2003
Okay, here's why mduffy is thining about buying an Xbox:
XBOX Live.

This apparenlty rules it, and dominates the PS online thing. You get to keep your name, so you can accumulate long term stats, you can list all you friends that are online, see what they're playing, etc.

The reason he's not thinking about a Gamecube is that despite it's craz y low price, it doesn't pay DVDs.

In terms of the controller, you can buy third party controllers are that supposed to be pretty good. Also, I'm pretty sure that the controller you now get is not the same one they released with the launch. Not 100% sure about that though.

Basically I think it depends on whether you want to play games online or not.

XBox Live
Posted by Nerhael on Nov 25, 2003
Yeah, that could make a difference. I've never used the online capabilities of either machine, but think Xbox has been doing it about a year longer, so shoudl be better off for that.

Yes, the controller you get with an Xbox now is much smaller than the original one they shipped.

halo you can play on computer now, so bleh.

i work at best buy..
Posted by krys on Nov 25, 2003
since i work at best buy, and i sell all three systems on a daily basis.. let me tell you what i think..
xbox live is better then ps2.. but you also have to pay a fee to play xbox live UNLESS you buy the live kit for $100 then you get it free for 12 months.. The reason xbox live is better, is because of the have their own online server, where ps2 you use the games server.. Xbox also uses that tactic that you don't have to buy a memory card because of their hard drive.. where ps2 you have to purchase a $35 memory card.. ps2 you also have to purchase the multi tap if you chose to have more then 2 people playing..
nintendo game cube is horribly cheap, and has awesome fun games on it.. not really strategy games.. but fun games. $139.99
what about the game boy sp? 119.99 this week at best buy.. sweet deal..
xbox has mostly mature games, and ps2 has probably the best variety..
as far as bundles go xbox really does have the better bundles, two games(star wars knights of the old republic and tetris... ) for $229.. and there is another one.. for $259.. with Halo and something else.. If you purchased it at best this weekend you also got Star Wars CLone Wars or a game of equal value FOR FREE!!!!
ps2 comes with ATV Off Road Fury 2 (value $59.99) and the network adapter for $259.99...

i do personally like ps2 better.. because of the game variety, and the games themselves.. the online capabilites are free.. which is awesome.. it may be a bit slower.. but.. Free!

the end.
any questions class?

Reasons to own an Xbox
Posted by phduffy on Nov 25, 2003
Follow this link.

Please pay particular attention to reason number 8. Then cream your pants.

Also, Krys, you bring up a good point. The Game Boy is awesome. If you loved the SNES, and wish they still made games for it, GBA is the way to go. And I only have the crappy GBA, not the SP.
But shit, look at this:
3 Syphony of the Night style Castlevania Games
Mario Kart
Metroid
Fire Emblem
Advance Wars 1 and 2
FFTA
New versions of Mario 2, Mario 3, Mario 4 and Yoshi's Island
like 19 different pokemon games, if you're into that
The Phantasy Star Collection
A new version of a link to the past (with a 4 player mode)

And you have to figure that they're going to make a new Zelda game...

So all in all, a pretty sweet lineup. Although, when the GC is only 30 bucks more....

One more thing..
Posted by phduffy on Nov 25, 2003
You pretty much can't go wrong with any of XBOX, PS2, GC, or GBA.

However, if you buy an NGage you are a fucking idiot.

Same thing if you hold out for a Phantom.

Krys, has BestBuy sold ANY NGages yet?

free online PS2
Posted by MDuffy on Nov 25, 2003
Someone mentioned that PS2 is free online. HOWEVER
some games you have to pay monthly fees for!
Another thing, xbox dvd player kills ps2 dvd.

Counterstrike is also on xbox... hmmmmmmmmm

PAUL- why do you think I will be disappointed if I put this on my wishlist?
Because mom hates me? O yeah I guess so.

Counterstrike
Posted by Nerhael on Nov 25, 2003
Counterstrike is also on PC, where it should be if you ask me. No fps can really be top of it's game on a console. Mouse movements are quicker and more precise.

As for dvd...no clue. I do know that my brother's XBox is ridiculously loud as a DVD. Wind of death while spinning.

hrmm
Posted by krys on Nov 25, 2003
with ps2 online.. i know for sure in the new year you have to pay for Final Fantasy 11, which is coming on it's own hard drive.. which is insane..

Paul.. i have never heard of the NGage.. tell me more!

and another thing that gameboy has is the e-reader.. where since we are all old you.. you can play old SNES, and NES games.. which is fucking awesome.. you can buy 5 packs of old games.. which also add features to actual game boy games..
with the gamecube right now you can get a zelda game which is a compliation of 5 different zelda games.. how can you say no to the gamecube??
and actually at regular price the gamecube and the game boy are the same price!!

ps2 feature.. Eye Toy.. which i really want... basically a webcam on top of the tv.. and you play games.. with your body.. awesome party feature..

xbox has the music maker.. which is a karoke machine basically.. also good times..

Ngage
Posted by phduffy on Nov 25, 2003
Krys, here's some info on the Ngage.

Nokia (large phone maker) thought that it would make some sense to have a cell phone that also plays video games. A Gameboy and a phone, makes perfect sense!
The problem is that there are like no games, it was released with little to no press (It came out in October), and it costs $499. But it gets better! Turns out that some hackers figured out ways to download all the games onto other Nokia phones. Basically, the hardware and software to play the games already existed, but Nokia decided to release these crazy expensive phone.... So, if you have a Nokia phone, you can download all the games for free, if you know where to go.

They bombed the launch so bad that in the first week they only sold 5000 units.
In the GameBoy's first week it sold more than that in New York alone.

Nerheal: I think that some ftp's can rule it on consoles. I think the problem is when you take a PC ftp and port it to a console. However, if you design it for the console and controller in question, things work out well. Consider Perfect Dark and Goldeneye. And lots of people like the "Turok" controls. And the good thing about playing ftp on a console is that they're designed for people with 2 hands, unlike PC ones which seem to require a minimum of 3, possibly 4 hands.

Here's an announcement of a sweet Walmart deal on Gamecubes...

http://www.411mania.com/games/news/article.php?news_id=4577

No idea if Walmart Canada is also doing it.

...
Posted by krys on Nov 27, 2003
paul,
the game that walmart(usa) is giving away the Zelda's Collectors edition is the same game that best buy is giving away when you purchase a gamecube..
the word is it might be dropping to $119.. i don't know for sure though..

that's all..

Fuck off, I don't want to give it a titl
Posted by phduffy on Nov 27, 2003
Yeah, I knew that that was the same game, it's just that Walmart has it on sale tomorrow, that's all.
